okay, my antivirus has a monitor on the toolbar. when i got on today, there was a red x beside the norton symobol(symbolizing something wasnt right). i entered the program and clicked fix, and it has processed the live updates, and says it is fixing the problem, but has been doing so for the last hour!

I think you are talking about the fraud/phishing banner(green bar) in your browser. If it's not green, then you need to open up the tasks and settings window (right click the Norton icon in your system tray). Click Advanced settings, and make sure the first 3 boxes are checked. Save settings before exiting.
Norton is full of problems i had it a few years ago and uninstalled it,what a waste of money.

yes it will slow down because they will start conflicting. Remove both of them and install avg free.
Both programs are going to use a set amount of resources, that's a given. The bigger issue might be in the fact that they will both try to scan new files as they are created/saved at the same time. This could cause both of them to use more resources and therefore slow you down. Also, if they both find a virus at the same time, you may run into a looping issue.
You could continue to run them both, but I would consider turning off the real-time protection on one of them. If you need to run a scan, you can still use it.
Antivirus software is viewed as a virus by other antivirus software. Having two will will cause conflicts and performance issues. It is possible that one will quarantine the other.
IMHO, you should keep kaspersky over nod32, simply because the viral definitions are updated sooner. This will allow you to keep using one of the av's you already have, rather than taking them both off and installing another free one that you may not be used to.

Sunshine is right on the money. My AVG had a problem and would not go away. I reinstalled it and then removed it. Another option is to go to Help and Support and restore your computer to the date before you installed AVG. Good Luck

AVG has the smallest memory footprint out of all of them. Google AVG anti virus,or GRISOFT. Totally free and effective.Edited to add: Sorry missed the part of firewall. Get Zone Alarm or Comodo firewall. Again,both free,and use very little memory comparatively speaking.
Eset's NOD32 is supposed to be the best with that. But use it only if you're VERY good with Computers because its interface is difficult. As for the firewall, I'm still looking. ZA seems to be better. Comodo is ok too. But it's kinda up to you personally

I installed norton antivirus 06 today and I keep getting these annoying pop ups like ever 10 seconds saying that theres a symantec email proxy error and that its unable to access the temporary file folder(error1003,6). Right click on the Yellow Globe with the black lines in it it should be on the bottom right corner of the screen.
Click on Disable Norton Internet Security and then it will ask you how long you want to disable it....I usually select 4 hours.
A Red X will appear next to the Yellow icon on the right corner of the screen and the pop ups will stop.
Hey come on, It is obvious that when u have a virus and when u disable a anti virus program the popup will stop.

You have to go to your registry and remove all instances of Norton manually. There are too many free antivirus programs to use Mcafee or Norton. I opened my add/remove programs to uninstall CA Etrust Antivirus 2005 as instructed by AT%26T Yahoo and could not find this program listed.
Norton has become a crap so not safe to install.
Search in your folders in the hard-drive for your anti-virus i.e. CA Etrust Antivirus and uninstall it.

I am waiting until they stop updating my AT%26T CA Anti-virus/Anti-spyware protection. When that happens I will not use the free Norton protection; I will download some other free protection such as AVG, Avira , or Avast for active virus protection and another for active spyware protection in addition to the free active spyware protection with Windows Defender that I am already using.
I used Norton before. With it my computer was much slower; the software would mysteriously stop working and was very difficult to uninstall and reinstall to get it to work again, and I had a lot more infections with it. I will never go back to Norton even if it is free,

Keep your machine up to date, operating system, antivirus, firewall any and all software. Microsoft is constantly patching holes in the Windows system and its Office software. So it is a good idea to keep up to date.
A good firewall is another way to protect your machine. Alas even those must be kept up to date and on. You'd be surprised how many people install firewalls and then turn them off because they didn't understand what the things were doing.
Spyware scanners have become necessary because of the many idiots putting either extra little programs into software downloads or putting bugs right into their web pages.
To answer your question, NO just putting an antivirus on the computer doesn't make it safe.

There weren't viruses for Macs even when it wasn't Unix-based. Macs are no more secure than the competition (see source). Would you write a virus to target a system that less than 1 in 20 people and very few companies will be using? That'll sure make the news! The few people that are actually computer-savvy enough to figure out how to use a Mac and put up with the compatibility issues are usually good at avoiding viruses anyway.
To answer your question, Macs are somehow slowly gaining popularity, but I still probably wouldn't use a typical anti-virus program. Try to find a slimmer program that's still effective, similar to Nod32 for Windows. It's better to be safe than sorry. Just because you don't hear about many midgets with HIV doesn't mean they shouldn't wear protection! ;-p
No computer is a hundred percent immune to viruses or malware. Although Mac OS is less susceptible to infection, it's always good practise to install software that protects your system. I would suggest you download and install ClamXav; a free virus scanner that's quite popular among Mac users. Give that a try before spending money on commercial software.
I downloaded the free edition of Avast but then it seemed to cause some of my programs to shut down. I decided to unistall it, but then I couldn't find the setup utility. I tried every program I had to get rid of it and in the end I just deleted all the files from program files and cleaned the registry.
Anyways, later on I got a virus that wouldn't let me open my other antivirus and I ended up reseting my operating system.

First problem. You appear to have had TWO Anti-virus programs running at the same time. This never works because each Anti-virus thinks the other IS a virus. And this may also explain why the original Avast un-install failed. Second problem, you tried to remove Avast manually. This requires expert skills.
So, download Avast again, but do not install it yet. Then, re-boot your PC in Safe Mode. And, using Add / Remove programs, un-install it, then re-boot normally and all should be well.
TIP: As counter-intuitive as this sounds, it actually works.

I remember reading something that explained why you shouldn't have two anti-viral programs on your computer but I can't remember exactly what the article said. Just remember that it said you shouldn't because they interfere with each other or something! As for the person above saying they have Ad-Aware and Norton, that is fine because Ad-Aware is not an anti-virus program - it is a anti-spyware program!!

This is an unusual thing to have happen. Under normal operation windows explorer, the program used to view your folders and the files contained there-in, does NOT load on every single startup. And yes I agree that would be very irritating, I've had something like this happen to me before.
Check your Start --%26gt; Program Files --%26gt; Startup. See if you have a link there for explorer.exe or for ''c:\program files\my annoying program''. You can just right click from there to remove that.
If you're not finding it there, then try Start --%26gt; Run --%26gt; msconfig then click on the Startup tab and scroll down through the items there and see if you can spot it. There are various ways it might be loading, you can probably figure it out by looking for the folder destination. Something like ''c:\program files\My Annoying Program'', somewhere in there.

Go to control panel, add/remove programs. Remove all unnecessary programs from your machine! Unnecessary means; peer to peer file sharing programs, such as Limewire, kazaa, etc., screen savers, anything with search or net in the name (spyware) and everything except what you know you should have. You should only have the programs you purchased and know and Microsoft office, nothing else.

I'm needing good antivirus and antispyware that doesn't use up a lot of system resources, is good at detecting and removing viruses, spyware, adware, trojans, keyloggers, rootkits, and all that other stuff. I currently have these tools: ZoneAlarm Security Suite, ThreatFire, Windows Defender, Ad-Aware 2007, Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal, CCleaner, RegCure, Spybot - Search %26 Destroy, SpywareBlaster, TuneUp Utilities 2008, and lastly Zappit!. The problem is I know I don't need all those tools for my computer to keep it free from the threats of the internet, so I'm asking you for your help so I can uninstall most of those program for something better, and more efficient. I need it to work with Windows XP, and like I said above need the program, or programs to work well. I'm also looking for something to fix my registry other than RegCure. I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

I like McAfee Total Protection. It is not free but can sometimes find a good sale at Office Max. I also have Webroot Spy Sweeper that does a good job.
I suspiciously got the Aurora virus at the exact same time I installed Norton Antivirus. Now Norton isn't picking it up so I can remove it. I know there are other programs and ways of removing Aurora, but why should I pay $50 for another spyware program? Why isn't Norton picking up on it? My settings are configured to find spyware and adware. Is it because I may have gotten the virus FROM Norton software? Help please.

Ok first of all Norton can't install a virus other ways Norton would have some law suits to attend to. Then everyone who had Norton could sue symantec for the money they need. So there is your proof that Norton isn't the virus maker also the reason isn't picking it up is because you need to update your virus definitons. Do that and then do a scan again if it fails then this means that there isn't a virus because I run Norton and I'm fine.

I never cared for Norton's, too many things get through it. For my personal computer I use Avast (www.avast.com). It's free for personal use and I've never had a problem with it. Avast finds corrupted emails I get daily from my website which Norton's never found and I haven't had any problems with spyware or virus' since switching to Avast.
I downloaded it cause I got it free along with Mcafee antivirus ware. As soon as I downloaded the Symantec, my PC ran so slow I got really pissed and took it off. It came with a firewall which I already have one through windows. The Mcafee is running great and my PC is running smooth. So anyone know why it runs slow with the other?

You can either reinstall it from the CD or you can log into your account on the Symantec website and redownload the program... it is the subscription part that you log in to verify.
If you're going to restore your computer to new.. I will assume you have or had some malware... so my advice would be to ensure that you format the computer, then reinstall windows, reinstall norton, properly configure norton and ensure you force manual updates and reboot until it is completely current, then manually force windows updates and reboot as necessary until all of them are completely current.
These steps will ensure that you secure the computer properly before you go on to other things.

Every virus has a virus signature, much like a finger print. A signature is a unique string of bits, or the binary pattern and virus scan software use this signature to detect and identify specific viruses. it scan through the files and keep comparing it to the signature files (usually dat file) it has. Once a virus signature has been detected, it will flag it as virus. Some viruses share the same signature.

Let me guess, he has Windows Vista, I have seen this a few times when installing Avast on it, try to download the installer again, if not, use another make, its not the fault of Avast, more to do with Vista.

Good luck. You need a lot of skill and an understanding of computer viruses to be able to write antivirus software.
The software is simple - the difficult part is getting (you can't ''make'' it) the library of virus signatures. For that you need the actual viruses that the program is supposed to find.
Recommend that you use the existing anti-virus software, such as Kaspersky 7.0 or AVG, or Happiness AntiVirus Viking Exploit Trackware, and other softwares.

Norton Antivirus and all of it's subsidiaries are notorious for slowing down computers. It has been well documented time and time again. It slows the computer down because in order to ''safe guard'' your Windows files, they move them to a more secure location. Windows then tries to access those files for basic operations, and can't find them right away, thus slowing your computer down.
Uninstall it as soon as you can for two reasons: It drastically slows down the computer, and it also doesn't work. It's one of the worst antiviruses in my opinion.
I have Kaspersky, and I haven't had one virus, spyware, adware, trojan or hidden process. It truely is the best antivirus available.
Symantec is simply the name of Norton's parent company, and yes, Norton is a resource intensive program so if you haven't sufficient system resources, it can slow down your computer significantly, especially if it is scheduled to run a full system at start up.

Avast and spyware doctor should be able to be installed as long as you don't have them running at the same time,it is reccommended that you have a least one decent av and 2 or 3 decent anti-spyware programmes on your pc.
With Spyware Doctor you should be able to disable the av,this will minimise the likelihood of false positives.

I don't know, but spyware doctor was not compatible with my windows vista for some reason. There are some that will say ''not compatible with windows vista'' and this one never said anything; so I paid for it and then had to get rid of it. You need to find the site to download Norton's and you'll have to pay for it to work. But I used to have Norton's and have found that Spyware Doctor is a better program which you can also find on the web. You will also have to pay for this program but they will send you a back up disk in the mail.

Most people seem to like AVG as a free anti-virus solution, but it all comes down to what you want in the end.
Popular doesn't mean good. Norton is 'popular' because stores force-sell it to unsuspecting customers.
I've removed Norton from many customers computers because it slowed them down to a crawl.... It's very badly written with lots of 'pop-ups' and fancy graphics.

I am sorry to say but you are not going to find an internet security suite which takes less than 50MB. 50MB is actually a very small amount of memory. Internet security suites from Norton, McAfee, BitDefender, Trend Micro and Kaspersky all use over 100MB of memory.
I recommend, instead of using an internet security suite, you mix and match security software. For example, use AVG as your antivirus, use Windows XP's firewall and use Spybot Search %26 Destroy or Lavasoft's Ad Aware as your anti spyware program. You can find all these programs, except Windows XP's firewall, at www.filehippo.com.
I use Ad-Aware SE Plus. It has a monitor that blocks tracking cookies, registry changes, and pop-ups. In task manager, it states that it only uses up around 12/13 megs in RAM.

(ANS) The Norton Anti Virus update subscription service is nothing more than a very expensive rip off from Symantec.
**I dumped Norton AV when they wanted to charge me an extra 拢12 just because I wanted to pay by debit card and not there preferred method which was (is) credit card.
**I had a total nightmare attempting to remove Norton AV from my system, it was horrific. In the end I had to goto the Symantec website and download special uninstaller program just to remove the dam thing. Plus my machine ran MUCH much faster after the program was removed. Norton Gobbles a very large amount of resources and yes! slows your system down which is one reason NOT to use Norton AV.
**I switched over to FREE AVG from Grisoft, which is in my experience a FAR FAR better product than Norton anyway. AVG has free daily updates of its control files %26 signature files. I highly rate AVG 10 out of 10 you would be hard pushed to find a better anti virus solution.

IAVG should pick it up automatically when scanning. But to make sure, turn of AVG, and then connect the HD. Turn AVG back on.
Anyway it only takes a second to check manually in AVG to make sure it sees the HD.

I have three AV programs that I trust completely. Panda is one of them. They have three different products that include their antivirus: Panda Antivirus, Panda Antivirus + Firewall, and Panda Internet Security suite. You can use the interactive troubleshooter to find solutions to your problem or use the ''contact us'' link at the upper right of the screen. I think Panda support personnel would be better qualified to diagnose and resolve problems with their own product, not SBC.

It is very good, companies that send a lot of email don't want viruses in their system. Yahoo has a good one. I don't think you need any more. Don't open attachments from people that you don't know, and if you do open them, just look, make sure you aren't running a program.

honestly mate... your best bet is to remove and delete it from your system. My suggestion... open up a search engine (google/yahoo/etc) and type in ''AVG free''. You'll get a link to the free download from AVG. Believe me... for being free... it works A LOT better than many of the ones you have to pay for. Along with the AVG antivirus/program... i also suggest you go and download the Yahoo Pop-Up Blocker and Tool Bar. Again, for being free... it works A LOT better than the ones you have to pay for and it lets you set up the tool bar how you want or even not show. Each antivirus software manufacturer names viruses differently. Perhaps the others just call it something different? Plus some antivirus software is starting to catch spyware, but this seems to be fairly selective, verging on the random in my opinion. So it's possible norton detects it as undesirable software rather than a virus, but the others don't classify it that way.
Others are probably detecting it under a different name. Most every anti-virus vendor will give a brand new virus (or other malware) there own unique name.
Latter on, the virus will sometimes be renamed to a more or less standardized one between all the members of the anti-malware industry.

i uninstalled my norton antivirus 2006 which was activated for 2457 days, i got AVG free but it wasn't good enough, now i'm tryin to install my norton with the same activation instructions but it's not working..!! it says i have -1 day left???!! what should i do to install it like when i did the first time?
AVG free is just as good as Norton and uses far less memory, you probably had an illegal version of Norton.

I clicked on Norton Antivirus on my desktop, tried to enable autoprotect by clicking on the yellow enable button on the right (this is NAV 2003 btw). Then I went into Options up top and the Auto Protect enable checkbox was unchecked and even though I check it, it STILL doesn't turn on Auto Protect and when I return to the checkbox, it is once again unchecked. help!
most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser.
you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus. i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar.
firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser.

First, you should get a new (or upgrade to current version of Symantec/Norton--but many people do not like Norton's security products) anti-virus program. 2003 is way too long ago to be terribly useful, even if you can solve the problem you posed.
the antivirus is in the off position and when i click to go on, it will automatically resume the off position after 5 sec.
Get a new Anti-Virus.
Contact Yahoo! Customer Care. They have some tools that they can help to address the problem if you are using the Yahoo Online Protection stuff.
Also, when you contact them, let them know if you are getting any errors, etc.

are you certain you need it? it can slow your system on the phone, disallow some attachments when you receive mms and has to be frequently updated. currently many antivirus are available for nokia phones, although one is available for sony. if it is a new problem you are facing you might just take it to the dealer and ask them to reload the software. that will help.

All you need is AVG Antivirus. It is just as good as Noron and it runs nicely on any machine, and and added bonus is that it is free to home users. I use it on my computer and I love it.

I've had good luck with CA Anti-Virus from Computer Associates. They are not a well known company for home users, but are big in enterprize software. I can't speak for the latest version specifically (ver 2007), but I have last year's version and the software uses less than 4 megabytes of memory while it's running.

I recently installed Norton Antivirus 2007 and I updated the program to newest version (liveupdate), but then it said At Risk.... with a Fix Now button on the left. So I clicked it but when I did a symantec page opened up saying

Since Symantec bought Norton the products they produce are flawed and buggy. The latest Ghost doesn't work, so when you order it they send the old one with it. Very unprofessional. I have uninstalled Norton from all my PCs (8 of them) and I use AVG and Zone Alarm. Used to have conflicts with other programs, but not any more.

I want to install a new antivurus, but it asks me to uninstall any old version or any other antivirus. My computer had the McAffee, but it expired, so I want to unistall it. How do I do that? The Add or Remove Programs doesn't work! It tells me to unistall first the other McAffee files, which I have no idea how to do that. Help!

P.S. The reason why they are so difficult to remove is so that malware cannot disable them easily, unfortunately, that makes it a pain in the rear end for us to remove it intentionally.
if you go to add/remove programs in your control panel find the file and choose remove, if that doesn't work you might have to choose change, thats what only works for nortons so it might work for mcaffee, good luck.

If you put in the CD, it should autorun. If it does not, then you can put the CD in and run autorun.exe from the root of the CD drive.

Sounds like your computer has got what our XP box has... completely crapped out by something it's doing. No idea what is eating the computer cycles (it scans as clean with all AV software I've tried)... but I think IE7 is part to blame. Plus random kids surfing unsuitable sites.
Get an offline virus scanner... or scan you disk drive in another AV equipped computer. Then if it's clean... revert to IE6 if you can.
DOes task manager (right click in the task bar, select 'task manager' or alt-ctrl-del and select task manager) tell you the CPU is flat busy? And does it identify a program that is using most of the CPU? If it does, try to identify what it is / where it is and stop it running as a first step.

Use the update button on your EZ program, even though you don't have the internet, a dialog box will pop-up then copy the website that is written then try downloading it in the nearest internet cafe....
So I have a system that I am trying to get online with. I know that Norton's Internet Worm Protection is the problem. I went through many guides to find out how to allow program rules, this is where my problem began.
I am unsure of what version I have. When I double click on Norton in my tool bar it comes up to the protection screen where it shows whats being protected. Up top I click Norton Antivirus and go down to setting. I go to ''Virus And Worm Setting'' and up comes a screen. I go down the tray to ''Internet Worm Protection. When I click it I get a screen that is faded and wont let me click any buttons on the internet worm protection. I need major help because I have been trying to solve it all weekend.
Norton is the worst anti-virus product ever made and I would not install it on my computer if I was paid to do so. Norton is more of a virus than an anti-virus. It's a huge resource hog, notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans. The software will do more harm to your PC than good and when you try to remove it, it leaves behind over 375 traces in your registry files/folders and subsystem. It's so bad they had to create a removal tool which is still not going to fix all the problems.
Kaspersky or NOD32 are the best.
If you want a free anti-virus, get AVG, Avast! or AntiVir (install only 1).
Nortons is pure garbage for many years. And each and every year Nortons just gets worse. Unable to find a virus or if found unable to remove.
Nortons will drive a normal person to insanity. My advise to you is go to add/remove and get rid of Nortons, or use their removal tool that also fails to do a complete 100% removal.

i have virus protection from norton antivirus and get messages that i am being attacked. is it from another computer? a virus intrusion? The actual IP address in question would help, although in most cases, incoming traffic like that is often routine. It would help to know whether it's from your home network, your ISP, or outside of your ISP.
it means that either someone's broke into your computer, or a virus is trying to get in, or both. be sure your windows or norton firewall is turned on. try to get the ip address of the hacker, do a virus scan immediately and delete the virus. be sure your anti-virus is turned on at all times and kept up to date. or it could be spyware trying to get in. run a anti-spy scan, and delete anything and everything detected. keep your anti-spy turned on and up-to-date at all times
