Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

depending on what level of scan you are doing is going to determine how much memory is being used. Also if you have logging enabled and have it set to write a new log everytime rather than overwrite the existing log then it'll take a little longer and use a few more resources as well. Also depends on what you have already running on your machine before you start the scan as to how many resources are available.
get more memory.
Are you trying to do other things while AVG is scanning? You need to leave the computer alone and let it scan.

You said you checked for spyware. How did you do that? Do you have SpyBot or something like that? That's the best way I know of to rid the computer of spyware, which will certainly slow it down. Unless you have AVG spyware, you need SpyBot and Ad-Aware. Get them and run them first, then run AVG. Then do a disk cleanup: Start, Programs, Accessoies, System tools, Disk Cleanup. Follow the prompts and get rid of everything it finds. This will help speed up your computer. Get SpyBot and Ad-Aware here: http://www.download.com/
If you have been adding more data to your hard disk, then it could be causing AVG to use more memory.

If I am not mistaken, in the preferences of AVG, you can set the task priority to low so that it will not interfere with other running programs and will scan on the back burner.
yes cozz it takes lots of memory get the latest free version of kaspersky from activevirusshield.com i think u wont have the same problem u r having with that antivirus wats the name avg? lol
